2 Power + 4 Twisted Pair Cat5e ROV Tether PUR Foaming Cable | Buoyant

2 power cores + 4 Cat5e twisted pairs PUR foaming neutrally buoyant ROV tether. Combined power and full Cat5e Ethernet in a single foamed buoyant ROV tether cable.

Product introduction

2 Power Cores + 4 Cat5e Twisted Pairs -- PUR Foaming Neutrally Buoyant ROV Tether

The 2-power + 4-pair Cat5e PUR foaming ROV tether is the most common hybrid ROV tether configuration for IP-based observation ROV systems: two power conductors supply the vehicle, while all four Cat5e twisted pairs carry 1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet (ROV control and IP camera video simultaneously). The foamed PUR jacket provides neutral buoyancy, reducing tether drag to near zero at operating depth. The foamed polyurethane (PUR) jacket uses a micro-cellular expanded jacket compound with a bulk density lower than seawater (~1.025 g/cm³), giving the cable near-zero or positive net buoyancy. This eliminates tether sag and reduces drag force on the ROV, improving vehicle manoeuvrability and reducing tether management workload during subsea operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the foamed jacket achieve buoyancy?

The jacket is manufactured from a micro-cellular expanded (foamed) polyurethane compound. During extrusion, a controlled foaming agent creates millions of tiny closed-cell air pockets within the jacket wall. These air cells reduce the bulk density of the jacket below that of seawater (~1.025 g/cm³), producing positive or neutral net buoyancy. The jacket retains all the abrasion resistance, oil resistance, and flexibility of standard PUR while achieving the buoyancy needed for ROV tether applications.

Can the ROV run Gigabit Ethernet and power simultaneously on this tether?

Yes. The 4 Cat5e pairs carry 1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet using all 4 pairs simultaneously (bidirectional), while the 2 power cores independently carry DC or AC power. There is no electrical interaction between the Cat5e pairs and the power cores because they are separate conductors. The Cat5e pair shielding prevents any power-switching noise from the power cores from coupling into the Ethernet signal.

  • ROV and AUV deployment tethers for power, data and video transmission to subsea vehicles
  • Neutrally buoyant tether cables for free-swimming ROV operations with minimal drag
  • Subsea ROV tooling and intervention system umbilicals requiring high-strength construction
  • Offshore inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) ROV tether cable assemblies
  • Deep-sea research vehicle systems requiring reliable tether cable performance at depth
