SM Fiber 1x9-125 ROV Tether | Neutrally Buoyant Single-Mode Foamed

Single-mode fiber 1x9/125 ROV tether, neutrally buoyant foamed PUR. OS2 single-mode 9/125 fiber for ROV tether requiring high-bandwidth data over neutral buoyant cable.

Product introduction

SM Fiber 1x9/125 (OS2) Neutrally Buoyant ROV Tether -- Foamed PUR

The 1x SM OS2 9/125 μm neutrally buoyant ROV tether uses a single ITU-T G.652D compliant OS2 single-mode fiber -- the international standard for long-distance single-mode fiber -- in a foamed PUR neutral-buoyancy tether. The 9/125 μm fiber (9 μm core / 125 μm cladding) supports 10 Gbps Ethernet (10GBASE-LR) at any ROV tether length, with attenuation as low as 0.2 dB/km at 1550 nm. The foamed polyurethane (PUR) jacket uses a micro-cellular expanded jacket compound with a bulk density lower than seawater (~1.025 g/cm³), giving the cable near-zero or positive net buoyancy. This eliminates tether sag and reduces drag force on the ROV, improving vehicle manoeuvrability and reducing tether management workload during subsea operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the foamed jacket achieve buoyancy?

The jacket is manufactured from a micro-cellular expanded (foamed) polyurethane compound. During extrusion, a controlled foaming agent creates millions of tiny closed-cell air pockets within the jacket wall. These air cells reduce the bulk density of the jacket below that of seawater (~1.025 g/cm³), producing positive or neutral net buoyancy. The jacket retains all the abrasion resistance, oil resistance, and flexibility of standard PUR while achieving the buoyancy needed for ROV tether applications.

What SFP transceiver should I use with this OS2 9/125 tether?

Use a 10GBASE-LR SFP+ (1310 nm, single-mode, to 10 km) for distances up to 10 km. For shorter tethers (≤2 km), 10GBASE-LW (SONET OC-192) is also compatible. For 1 Gbps (1000BASE-LX), use a 1000BASE-LX SFP (1310 nm, single-mode). For bi-directional single-fiber operation, use a pair of 1000BASE-BX10-D and 1000BASE-BX10-U SFPs (Tx at 1490/1310 nm, Rx at the opposite wavelength). Confirm the transceiver TX power and RX sensitivity against the tether length and connector loss budget.

Applications

  • ROV and AUV deployment tethers for power, data and video transmission to subsea vehicles
  • Neutrally buoyant tether cables for free-swimming ROV operations with minimal drag
  • Subsea ROV tooling and intervention system umbilicals requiring high-strength construction
  • Offshore inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) ROV tether cable assemblies
  • Deep-sea research vehicle systems requiring reliable tether cable performance at depth

Customization Options

  • Custom conductor configurations: power cores, twisted pairs, coaxial, fiber optic combinations
  • Neutral buoyancy engineered for specific seawater density and operating depth ranges
  • Kevlar, polyester or Dyneema strength member options for required break strength
  • TPU, PUR or specialized jacket materials for optimal flex life and abrasion resistance
