6 Power + 5 RS485 Data Cable Negative Buoyant ROV Tether | PUR

6 power + 5 RS485 data cable negative buoyant ROV tether. Dense PUR for seabed-lying ROV with 6 power channels and 5 RS-485 data pairs that sinks at depth.

Product introduction

6 Power + 5 RS-485 Data Cable Negative Buoyant ROV Tether

The 6-power + 5-RS485 negative buoyant ROV tether is a complex seabed-lying tether for large ROV systems requiring six power supply channels and five independent RS-485 data buses. The dense solid PUR jacket (non-foamed) gives the cable negative buoyancy, keeping it on the seabed during long-range ROV traverses. Five independent RS-485 channels support multiple Modbus device buses (thruster controllers, sensor modules, manipulator controllers) without data bus contention.

Parameter Specification
Power Cores 6 x stranded tinned copper (CSA per spec)
RS-485 Pairs 5 x twisted pairs (shielded, 24AWG)
Total Conductors 6 power + 10 RS-485 = 16
Jacket Dense solid PUR (negative buoyancy)
Buoyancy Negative (sinks in seawater)
RS-485 Channels 5 independent Modbus buses
Custom Core CSA, jacket density, armour, length

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does this ROV tether need 5 RS-485 buses?

RS-485 Modbus RTU is a shared bus limited to one master and multiple slaves per segment. Large ROV systems with many independent subsystems avoid bus contention by using multiple physically separate RS-485 buses: Bus 1 -- horizontal thrusters; Bus 2 -- vertical thrusters; Bus 3 -- gripper/manipulator; Bus 4 -- sensor array (depth, temp, compass); Bus 5 -- payload or camera pan/tilt. Independent buses prevent any one subsystem from blocking or delaying communication with others.

Can RS-485 coexist with power in the same cable bundle?

Yes, with proper shielding. Each RS-485 pair must be individually shielded (foil + drain) to prevent power switching noise from the thruster power conductors from coupling into the differential RS-485 signal. The shield must be earthed at one end only (single-point earth) to prevent earth loop currents. With proper shielding, RS-485 at 115,200 baud can reliably operate in the same cable as 48V DC thruster supply.

Applications

  • ROV and AUV deployment tethers for power, data and video transmission to subsea vehicles
  • Neutrally buoyant tether cables for free-swimming ROV operations with minimal drag
  • Subsea ROV tooling and intervention system umbilicals requiring high-strength construction
  • Offshore inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) ROV tether cable assemblies
  • Deep-sea research vehicle systems requiring reliable tether cable performance at depth

Customization Options

  • Custom conductor configurations: power cores, twisted pairs, coaxial, fiber optic combinations
  • Neutral buoyancy engineered for specific seawater density and operating depth ranges
  • Kevlar, polyester or Dyneema strength member options for required break strength
  • TPU, PUR or specialized jacket materials for optimal flex life and abrasion resistance
  • Direct connector termination and over-moulding for plug-and-play system integration
