The 2x22AWG + 2x2x26AWG neutrally buoyant ROV tether is electrically compatible with the Seabotix LBV series of observation ROVs and similar vehicles using the same conductor configuration. Two 22AWG conductors carry the power supply, and two shielded 26AWG twisted pairs carry RS-485 control data and camera signals. The foamed PUR jacket provides neutral buoyancy identical to the original Seabotix tether. This cable is offered as a replacement, repair, or extension option for Seabotix operators. The foamed polyurethane (PUR) jacket uses a micro-cellular expanded jacket compound with a bulk density lower than seawater (~1.025 g/cm³), giving the cable near-zero or positive net buoyancy. This eliminates tether sag and reduces drag force on the ROV, improving vehicle manoeuvrability and reducing tether management workload during subsea operations.

How does the foamed jacket achieve buoyancy?

The jacket is manufactured from a micro-cellular expanded (foamed) polyurethane compound. During extrusion, a controlled foaming agent creates millions of tiny closed-cell air pockets within the jacket wall. These air cells reduce the bulk density of the jacket below that of seawater (~1.025 g/cm³), producing positive or neutral net buoyancy. The jacket retains all the abrasion resistance, oil resistance, and flexibility of standard PUR while achieving the buoyancy needed for ROV tether applications.

Is this cable a direct drop-in replacement for the original Seabotix tether?

This cable matches the electrical specification of the Seabotix standard tether (2x22AWG power + 2x2x26AWG shielded pairs). For a direct drop-in replacement, you must also match the connector type and termination at both ends (topside tether management unit and ROV tether entry). We can supply the cable with the correct connectors fitted and pressure-tested if you specify the connector types and depth rating.
